True Wisdom | Daily Devotional 1619

What if true wisdom has less to do with what you say and more to do with how you live? In today’s episode, Lauren Alessi Burgos takes us into James 3:13 and reminds us that godly wisdom is revealed through a good life, humble actions, and contentment. Instead of feeling the need to boast, prove ourselves, or compare our lives to others, we can allow the fruit of our lives to speak for itself.

We’ll be challenged to consider whether insecurity or comparison is driving our words and learn what it looks like to simply be grateful for the season God has given us. True wisdom doesn’t need to show off. It trusts God, walks in humility, and finds contentment in what He is doing right now.

Let’s join in prayer and devotion as a community, thanking God for the lives He has given us and asking Him to help us walk in wisdom, humility, and contentment in every season.

Hey there, we're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to-do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five-minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast.

Lauren Alessi Burgos

Hello, everyone. My name is Lauren Burgos, and I am your host for this week. I am so excited about today's episode, and I just want to jump right in. This whole week we've been talking out of James 3, and we have been discussing the tongue, the mouth, what the Bible has to say about the words that come out of our mouth. The Bible talks a lot about out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. It talks a lot about our words, but James 3 just went hard on like condemning the way we speak, basically, saying that we should not speak with blesses, blessings, and cursings coming out of our mouth, talking about how like the tongue is really like it's full of corrupt evil. Um, and humans can tame a lot of animals, but no human being can tame the tongue. So it's kind of felt like just don't talk at this point. Like, what are you even gonna say? You know? But in today's episode, we're jumping into the part of James three that talks about two kinds of wisdom, and it talks about wisdom. And I think this is gonna bring a lot of clarity to the first part of James 3 that talks about kind of like running your mouth and saying all the wrong things and talking about yeah, that that part that says, but no human being contained the tongue. Okay, so what do we do about it? Then I think this is gonna give us our answers. Our key verse of the day is James 3.13, but we're gonna be reading a little bit more. But let's just James 3.13, it says this who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done, and the humility that comes from such wisdom. There is our answer right there. If you go back, and we discussed this before, it talked about how the tongue can make great boasts, how it's a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts, and it's like a great forest set on fire by a small spark. And here it's actually saying the opposite. It's talking about if you're wise, let them show it not by great boasts, but just by living a good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from such wisdom. We don't see this often in life, like in today's day and age. We don't see people who are living by wisdom saying, I don't need to talk about my life, I don't need to brag about my life. I'm just gonna live my good and simple, God-pleasing life that I know I'm following in his will and what he has planned for me. I'm just gonna live it to the fullest because that's wisdom. And and again, I don't need to brag because I I know what God has done for me, and I don't need to talk about it. I just know my life shows fruit of that. And that's humility. So I think when, and we'll we'll continue on with this tomorrow, but I think when James talks about, you know, the tongue can make great boasts, and human beings can train so many things, but it can't tame the tongue. This is what it's telling us to do. You you don't have to run your mouth off and talk about, oh, well, I want to do this with my life, and you know, well, my kids are just perfect because everybody's kids are perfect, and everybody's kids like my kid knows that ABC is in there three months, and it's like, what? Like, we don't have to that's an exaggeration, but like we don't have to constantly be bragging about our life. And these are simple, dumb things that I'm saying, but we don't have to be the ones doing that. Sometimes that's out of insecurity. Let's just be real. I know that's real for me. Sometimes I feel the need to do that because I just feel insecure about myself and my life. And you know who knows that better than anyone? God. And he's saying, Don't let your don't let your mouth run with that. You don't need to be insecure because who's your source? I'm your source. Like, why are you insecure about what I'm doing? True wisdom says I don't need to show it off, I don't need to brag about it. I'm just gonna live the good life God has given me. And me just being content and living the good life God has given me is wisdom. And there's a lot of humility done in that. So, what are some examples by that? It's of that practically, it's not getting in a hurry to do the next thing. Not constantly talking about, like, for example, I just got married, I've been opening about, I've been open about that, but all my friends are having kids. And it's very easy to want to talk, be in the conversation about having kids, about just want to be in, you know, the season of life that everybody else is and have kids. But if that's not what God has for me right now, then I've got to be content in the good life and the deeds that God has done in my life right now. And I don't have to brag about what God is gonna do or brag about what I think God is gonna do. I just gotta be content with what God has given me right now and live my life the best that I can right now. My husband just walked into the recording, so he's like, Yeah, because that's how we feel. Let's go. Anyways, so those are some practical ways that you could be wise and not constantly feel to like run your mouth on about stuff. That's a terrible way of saying it, but it's true. But maybe today, think about what are some ways that you can live a life of wisdom and humility and not let your tongue lead the way. Maybe it isn't, okay, let me not constantly talk about myself. You know, those people that are like always talking about themselves, they can't help it. Maybe it is in a way where you're like, you know, maybe I shouldn't always be talking about what God has done for me or things going on in my life. Like, maybe just ask others how they're doing. These are practical examples, but really reflect on how you can live a life of humility and wisdom just by living the life God has given you and being content in that. Let's pray. Dear Lord, we thank you. First of all, Lord, we want to enter your gates with thanksgiving. And before we ask you to do anything else, God, Lord, we thank you for the lives you have given us. And Lord, if you don't do another thing in our lives, God, if you don't bring the blessing we've been praying for, God, let us find contentment in that. Let us lead with wisdom in our lives. Not feeling the need to boast about, oh, look at what God's gonna do for me. No. Or boast about, oh, look how much better my life is than somebody else's. No. Lord, let you be the major source, and Lord, let us just truly lean on you for your wisdom, Lord. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
