The Bible's Purpose

The Bible's Purpose

Why do we sometimes find ourselves asking big questions about the Bible—questions it doesn’t seem to answer directly?

In today’s episode, host Richelle Alessi is joined by her husband Chris Alessi as they explore the true purpose of the Bible. Together, we’ll learn why the Bible gives us exactly what we need to know for our faith, even if it leaves some of our “want to know” questions unanswered. We’ll discover how understanding this purpose can deepen our trust in God’s Word and help us stand firm, even when faced with doubts or debates.

Let’s gather as a community for today’s devotional and pray for grace, discernment, and a greater relationship with the author of scripture.

You're listening to my Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1318.

00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:48.490
Today's Devo is called the Bible's Purpose. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Good morning, everybody and happy Wednesday. Welcome back to another episode of my Morning Devotional Podcast. My name is Rachelle Alessi and I'm with my husband Chris Alessi this week. Good to be here again. Yep. And he's with me all week. And we're going to be talking about what the Bible is. And that's a question that I think every Christian at some point of their life will ask.

00:00:48.810 --> 00:01:10.769
And this week is just going to give you tools to continue to get to know your Bible more and grow your faith and your relationship with God. So today we're gonna talk about the Bible's purpose. Yeah. And we've even made some show notes available for you just to help you kind of process through all of this. And I don't wanna say this episode might ruffle feathers, so I'm not aiming to.

00:01:10.769 --> 00:01:36.340
It's just to necessarily give people the information to some real questions that they have. So when it comes to the Bible's purpose, we're only using that title to make this point that the Bible tells you what you need to know, not what you want to know. So when you look at the book of Genesis, you know, there are some questions, how much of it is literal? Are the seven days literal or are they not?

00:01:37.140 --> 00:02:59.150
And then all of a sudden, people get into these large debates about things like, oh, wow, if they're literal, how could they be literal? If the sun isn't made to the third or the fourth day and you get all these discussions, they look at Adam and Eve, they have these sons. Where did their daughters come from? Or, sorry, where did the wives of their sons come from? Was it their daughters? Was that weird? There's all these questions that can sometimes pop up when you read the Old Testament, when you read some of the New Testament. But the reality is, is that if the Bible wanted us to know, if God wanted us to know whether the days were literal or metaphorical, they would have said it. The Bible doesn't exist to tell me everything I want to know. It tells me what I need to Know, and this is important because if you go back to that Genesis example, think about Moses. If Moses is the author of Genesis, which Catholics, Protestants, everybody agrees that Moses is the author of Genesis. That means they didn't have any writings that would have been telling them about their life before Egyptian slavery. They would have been raised in slavery for as long as they were. They would have been around all of the false gods of the Egyptians, and now they find themselves in a desert. They saw this God do amazing things. They saw crazy things happening. And they heard Moses say it was God.

00:02:59.229 --> 00:03:10.219
The elders of their faith said this was God. But some of the individuals wouldn't have really even known what that meant. And you see that kind of thing play out today. So he separates the waters.

00:03:10.219 --> 00:03:40.400
Now they're. They're in the desert and they're being led by fire and, and a cloud at night. There, there's food appearing in the morning. There's all these crazy things happening. And Moses needing to encourage them because it was 40 years in the desert. 40 years needing to encourage them. He writes not to tell them the literal beginning. As far as God made it in literal seven days, he writes to tell them everything started with God.

00:03:41.039 --> 00:04:20.060
God created everything. So even when you look at this sand and you say there's not, there's no greenery here, how are we ever going to eat fruit? How are we ever going to find meat? How are we ever going to find water? The real aspects of life that would have come up with anybody going through the desert for 40 years, it was his way of saying, guys, God made all of this. This is the same God who just separated the waters for you. This is the same God that just pulled us out from Pharaoh's hand. And we basically robbed them blind on the way out because they gave us their gold and their silver. The same God who did all of that created the earth. He created everything. Everything came from him.

00:04:20.379 --> 00:05:54.459
And in the same way, God can sustain us here because everything you see around you, God made. I say that because there are moments where we come up against questions in scripture or we find videos on TikTok or YouTube of people seemingly using the, the, the hole between the things I wish I could know and the things that the Bible actually lays out. They feel like they, they try to take advantage of that to, to tear away at the Bible's legitimacy. But the reality is, is that the Bible does not exist to tell me everything I want to know. It lays out what I need to know, which again, tells me I can trust it. And the mystery that's left over. Well, I feel like those are fun conversations to have. We can have fun debates on whether or not I think it's literal or not. None of it affects my actual faith because the Bible has told me all I need to know. I love that. And I hope that next time we might have a question. And is it either whether you're arguing you think it's literal or not, that you come to the point and ask yourself, is this what God wants me need to know? Is this what he meant to write for me? So that is actually a great tool for us to have moving forward as we read the Bible. So thank you. Can you pray for us? Absolutely, Father. As we try to live our lives in the mystery where there are things we wish we could know that we don't, and we're trying to make sense of the things that are in scripture, Lord, I pray your grace would be sufficient for us. I pray that as we read your word, we would know more and more about you.

00:05:55.329 --> 00:05:58.930
Not the things we wish we knew, but more and more about you.

00:05:59.410 --> 00:06:17.769
And allow that knowledge to keep us strong in the midst of any debate going out there or any new information. We will not be tossed to and fro in our faith because of some TikTok video or because of some YouTube debate, but rather because we know the author of scripture. So we thank you for it.

00:06:17.769 --> 00:06:42.220
