Teach Us To Pray

Teach Us To Pray

Have you ever found yourself wondering how to pray when words just don’t seem enough? In today’s episode, guest host Lauren Alessi walks us through one of the most foundational passages on prayer—when Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray in Matthew 6. Together, we’ll reflect on the Lord’s Prayer, explore how each part can serve as a model for our own prayers, and discover practical ways to shape our conversations with God, even when life feels overwhelming or uncertain.

Let’s lean into this devotion as a community, bringing our hearts before God and learning to pray with trust, honesty, and gratitude. Join us as we seek His presence together in prayer and daily devotion.

You are listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1267. Today's Devo is called Teach Us to Pray. Hey there. We're the Alessi's, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.

00:00:22.320 --> 00:00:58.950
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. Hello everyone, my name is Lauren Alessi. I will be your host for this week. Happy Tuesday. I hope you are enjoying your week thus far. I hope it's going good for you and I'm really excited because this week we're talking about prayer, which is really what this podcast is kind of halfway all about. It's about the word, it's about prayer. So yeah, it's been, it's been pretty cool to dive into so far. Maybe this podcast podcast is a little, this week's podcast is a little bit sending you off edge.

00:00:58.950 --> 00:01:30.090
Cuz maybe you're somebody who's been praying for a specific thing for a long time and you're like, I don't know how I feel about prayer. I know, I, I know if you are a Christian and if you are human that we've all been there. Just know that you're not alone. Just know that you're not a bad Christian for thinking that way. That you are. It's okay, it's. You're gonna be okay. Just continue listening on for the rest of this week and, and I hope it blesses you. I hope you take something from this week's podcast and that it blesses you in some, some way shape or form.

00:01:30.409 --> 00:01:51.750
Today's verse, we're going to be talking about prayer and we're going to be kind of reflecting on the part in the Bible in Matthew where Jesus specifically teaches his disciples how to pray. And it's in verse Matthew 6. It's actually 6, 9, 13. But we're just going to focus on one specific verse. And it says this. Jesus is speaking and he says this in verse 9.

00:01:52.150 --> 00:01:55.909
Pray then like this. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

00:01:56.230 --> 00:01:59.750
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

00:01:59.909 --> 00:02:03.189
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts.

00:02:03.590 --> 00:02:28.240
And we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. One thing I want to focus on is this Jesus saying these words exactly. Pray then like this. Jesus is telling his Disciples exactly how to pray. Let's think about this for a second. Jesus is not just telling his disciples, oh, go pray. Go. Go to the garden and pray. Go, just pray to God.

00:02:29.838 --> 00:03:04.610
And maybe you've been there in. With, like, a leader or somebody in your life where they're like, oh, just pray about it. Just pray about it. And you're like, how do I pray about it? This is so much bigger than me. This is like something I can't even put words behind. How do I. How do I even pray about my. My loved one who, like, is sick? Or how do I pray about my. My friend who wants nothing to do with Christianity, and they're, like, ruining their lives? I don't know. But we all have those life issues where you're like, how do I even put this into words? And how do I pray about it? What I love about Jesus is he's telling his disciples, just pray them like this.

00:03:04.849 --> 00:03:08.530
And he led by example, and he showed them exactly how to do it.

00:03:09.009 --> 00:03:12.129
And then in turn, the disciples were able to show us.

00:03:12.969 --> 00:04:38.459
And I'm not saying you have to follow this exact prayer every day, because some people actually do that. I'm not saying you have to do that. But what we can glean from this is that it's a framework for all of our prayers. Look at how Jesus starts it. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. We should always enter his gates with thanksgiving. We should always glorify God. We shouldn't just always be praying, saying, oh, you know, God, I need this. You know I need this. You know, I could really use some help right about now. No, we should always be saying, you know, God, you've been really good to me. Thank you, Lord. We should always bring glory to him when entering his presence. We should always be mentioning repentance and worship, be showing our dependence to God. Give us this day our daily bread. Notice how in the midst of saying, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We're giving him glory. We're giving him honor. But he says, give us this day our daily bread. Even in the midst of that prayer, he's saying, lord, you know I need my daily bread today, Lord, you know my needs. You know I need them, Lord. So please make them available to me. It's okay to make your requests known to God, which we will continue, I promise, in the middle of this week, with the rest of this week, and forgive us our debts. And we also have forgiven our debtors. So we're seeing that forgiveness has to be in our prayers, asking for forgiveness has to be in our prayers and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

00:04:39.339 --> 00:05:30.000
So if you're in a situation where you're like, I don't even know how to pray about this situation, I don't even know how to put into words what I'm feeling right now. I just know I need to be in God's presence. I know I need to take this to him. I want to ask you these questions. Just reflect on this. Which part of this prayer, the Lord's prayer resonates with your current season? Is it a prayer? Is it a prayer that you need to just give glory to him, that you just need to thank him? Is it a prayer that you just need to be saying, your kingdom come, your will be done. Not my will, but your will, God. Is it a prayer that you say, lord, just give us, give me my day, you know, this day, my daily bread, nothing else, God, maybe that's your prayer. And then second question is this. How might you use this model, shape your daily prayer life?

00:05:30.319 --> 00:06:48.110
Again, I, I don't think you need to like copy and paste this prayer. And like, this is the only prayer you say because again, like we said yesterday, God is inviting you into a personal invitation relationship with him. He wants to know, like, your specific needs. But whatever part of this prayer resonates with you, use this as a model, use this as a framework, bring glass glory to him, ask for forgiveness, make your requests made known to God and also worship him in your daily prayer life. And it seems so simple, but it's also so profound. And that's why God tells his disciples, pray then like this. Let's pray. Lord, we thank you for the example that, that Jesus gave in your word and to his disciples of how to pray. Lord and God, we pray that you help us see not prayer as just a duty or as a job or as a religious, you know, work, Lord, but as a way to truly align ourselves with yours and to align our hearts with yours. God, in Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it, your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day. If you found value in this devotion, share it with a friend.
