Do memories from the past ever sneak up and weigh on your heart?
In today's episode, Stephanie Alessi Muiña leads us through a thoughtful look at the power of moving forward and letting go. Using the real-life drama between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber as a modern-day parable, we'll explore together why dwelling on the past can be so damaging, and what God’s word teaches us about stepping boldly into a new season. Through scriptures like Luke 9:62 and Isaiah 43:18, we’ll uncover practical wisdom for releasing old hurts, forgiving ourselves and others, and embracing the fresh start God offers each of us.
We invite you to join our community in prayer and devotion as we choose forgiveness, let go of yesterday, and declare freedom in the new day God is creating.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional Podcast, Episode 1463. Today's devo is called, "Selina and Haley.".
Voice Over:
Hey there! We're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to-do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a 5-minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
Good morning everybody and happy Wednesday. I am hoping that you're still listening to my devos this week and that this random topic of celebrity drama hasn't, uh, chased you away. And for all the men listening, I sincerely apologize if this is not your kind of, your kind of thing. Maybe I'm educating you, or you could just skip to minute 2 or 3 and you'll get the bulk of it. But I hope that this is blessing you. I hope that it's just bringing you fun and it's, it's bringing the word of God in a fun way. So let's dive into today's devotional. This is one of my favorite pieces of celebrity gossip and drama to talk about, and I'm talking about Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
Um, I have to be careful talking about this because years ago I used to be obsessed with this particular piece of drama. Like, I knew every detail. I knew all the, the little posts and the likes and the relationship timelines. I was all over it. And if you don't know anything about these two, trust me, it's all over the internet. Just look up Hailey and Selena and you can learn everything. But pretty much Selena Gomez dated Justin Bieber. They were on and off for a long time.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
Everybody thought they would end up together, and then it ended Who knows how it ended? Only they know. And within a very, very short time, Justin Bieber ended up with Hailey Baldwin, and within a couple months they were engaged, married, the whole thing. And now she is Hailey Bieber. And it's so sad because there was so much drama circulating around that, uh, triangle, love triangle. Probably 10, 8 years ago. And it's sad because they were just kids. Yeah, they made mistakes. I don't know what went down really, but they were kids.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
And then recently it started to stir back up that Hailey Bieber was secretly obsessed with Selena Gomez, that she was trying to be like Selena Gomez. She would dress like her, she would make TV shows like her, she would make social media reels like her. Everything was pointing to Hailey Bieber was obsessed with her husband's ex-girlfriend, long-lost love. And you know, I learned one thing from all of that. I didn't wanna dive more into who was right and who was wrong because we really will never know. But this is one thing that I took away. Um, it is so dangerous. To bring up the past.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
Because no matter what side you take, no matter who's right and who's wrong, it is so damaging to somebody's present to bring up their past. Nobody's perfect. Everybody has made their mistakes, and everybody and their mother has a story. And you may have friends or family that have a past that might have hurt you. Or might have hurt themselves. And it is very real and very normal that in a weak moment we might start to think back on that past. I don't know about y'all, but it happens when I'm brushing my teeth in the morning. I'll be brushing my teeth and I'll be thinking about the things that I, I still need to let go of.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
But I want to read two Bible verses to you today, one that shows you the truth about what Jesus says about looking at the past, and then one that's going to encourage you. And Luke 9:62 says, but Jesus said to him, no one after putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God. Ouch! Oh my gosh. Okay, but let's skip to Isaiah. Isaiah 43:18 also says, do not call to mind the former things. Or consider things of the past. Behold, I am doing something new. That's God saying that.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
So it's very easy to get caught up in something that happened years ago, but the past is a danger to our present. If you have finally found forgiveness, if you've moved on, then please don't let anything bring you backwards. Because God says to behold, he is doing something new. He's doing something new in your heart. He's doing something new in your mind. He's doing something new in your relationships. God is moving forward, so you should too. If he's trying to push time forward, why are we trying to push time back? If God has found forgiveness for that person, why do we keep trying to bring up the past? And something that has really helped me in terms of forgiveness and letting go of certain people is every single day in my prayer time, I just start declaring over my mind, Lord, I am stepping into the new season.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
God, I forget the former things. Lord, I want this new life. I want all those memories of the past to be gone and for me to be forgiven. And I don't ask God, I declare over myself with the blood of Jesus and in the name of Jesus, that the past is gone and the new season is here. Because all that stuff between Hailey and Selena, it is gone. And I actually do pray that those girls will one day be able to fully let go of the past, no matter what the internet says. Thank God us normal people don't have the internet bringing up our junk. So if the internet's not bringing it up and if God is not bringing it up, then we shouldn't bring it up.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
Forgive yourself, forgive that friend, forgive that family member. Let it go and step into the new season. Let's pray. God, we just thank you that you are constantly making a new way for us. You don't want us to be stuck in the past. You don't want us to harbor anger towards somebody, but you want us to step into a life of joy and forgiveness and peace. So God, we step into that today. And if there is anything or anyone that keeps bringing the past to the surface of our mind, we just rebuke it right now in the name of Jesus.
Stephanie Alessi Muiña:
We rebuke that voice. We rebuke those old posts. We rebuke those thoughts. Whatever it may be that's trying to stir up that unforgiveness or those old days, we just shut it down and we cast it down right now in the name of Jesus. And we declare that we are stepping into a new season, a new season of freedom in Jesus. And in Jesus' name we pray, amen and amen.
