Let's Talk, Pt.3: Change Your Filter

Ever catch yourself saying something and wondering where that came from? In today’s episode, host Gaby Alessi continues this week's series on the power of our words and the influence of our mindset on what we speak. Together, we'll look at Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 15, where He reminds us that it’s not our situation or what comes into our lives that defines us—but what comes out of our mouths. We’ll discover how our filters—like tiredness, frustration, or even joy—shape our words, and how we can choose to put on a filter of faith, grace, and endurance no matter what we’re facing.
Let’s lean in as a community, praying for God to transform our hearts and speech, so that even in challenging circumstances, our words can be life-giving fountains of hope and encouragement. Join us as we begin our day seeking God’s guidance together in prayer and devotion.

00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:50.640
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. Well, happy Wednesday everybody. Hope you are all enjoying your week so far. I pray that God is bringing you blessings and that God is showing you that he is near to you and that you are seeing his hand in your life more than ever before. We're going to continue the series about let's Talk and looking at the words that we use and why are they important?
00:00:51.359 --> 00:00:54.399
Is it important to God, the words that come from our mouth?
00:00:55.340 --> 00:02:04.930
And today we're going to read from Matthew 15. And this verse comes from a altercation, if you want to call that, to add some drama to it. It's a moment that Jesus is having with the Pharisees. And this is in Matthew 15 where the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, they come to Jesus and they notice that the disciples are not washing their hands before they eat. Well, they call out, jesus, why do your disciples break the commands or they break the traditions of the elders? They're not washing their hands before they eat. And so Jesus is coming over and he's saying, well, why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? And so they start to argue about, you know, you are saying that you should honor your father and your mother, but you're, you're in your actions, you're not doing it. And they're having this, this altercation. And in verse eight, Jesus says, these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain. Their teachings are merely human rules. And then it says this in verse 10 and 11, Jesus called to the crowd, to him and said, listen and understand. What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.
00:02:05.650 --> 00:02:37.539
What Jesus is trying to speak here, and he's, he's addressing the issue that the elders, or excuse me, the Pharisees are talking about. He's addressing the tradition, he's addressing the culture. He's addressing the, the fact that in their speech or how they're saying it or how they're acting. They're acting like it pleases God. But he's saying, you don't really please God, right? The things you do, it does not matter. It's what comes out of your mouth, it's the heart in which comes out, or words come out of your mouth.
00:02:38.740 --> 00:03:06.629
And it hit me so hard because sometimes we talk and we speak in response to our situation. For example, we say, well, I'm having a really hard day because my car broke down this morning. And then when I got it fixed, it was going to cost me 800. And then in the meantime, I got a call about my kid, and now I can't pick up my kid because they had a fight at school. And then this is happening, and then I just got a bill in the mail. And this is what. And our circumstance looks like.
00:03:06.629 --> 00:03:13.580
You should be struggling. Our circumstance speaks to struggle. Our circumstance speaks to frustration.
00:03:14.300 --> 00:04:02.520
But what Jesus is saying is it's not what goes into you that defiles you. It's what comes out of you. So you could be having a terrible day, a terrible situation. Your kids are. Are really struggling, your spouse is really struggling, your job is on the ropes, your finances are not coming through, but that does not defile you. It's how you respond to those things in the words that you say. So what this proves to me is that we can't blame our negative speech, the things that we say, we can't blame that on our circumstance. We can't blame or excuse the reason we talk this way on other people. We can't excuse it on the things that we can't control. Because our negative speech, how we talk, it comes from one thing and one thing only. Our mindset.
00:04:04.289 --> 00:04:07.409
See, all of us have a filter, every single one of us, me included.
00:04:08.129 --> 00:04:25.649
A couple days ago, when I came back from camp and I was tired, my filter was tired. And everything I thought, everything that came into me, every experience that I had, was through the filter of I'm tired. Maybe your filter is anger, bitterness, disappointment, frustration.
00:04:26.769 --> 00:04:50.110
Maybe you have a filter of lack and not enough insecurity. Whatever your filter is, that is the thing that's going to affect your words. So if you're bitter in a situation and God hasn't come through for you, or you believe God hasn't come through for you, then all of your words are going to come out in a way that speaks to God. Hasn't come through for me.
00:04:50.910 --> 00:04:54.709
If you're angry, you're angry at your parents, you're angry at your.
00:04:54.709 --> 00:05:55.319
Your situation. That's what's going to shape your words. Now, if, if your circumstance is amazing and you're in the best place of your life, that's the filter of grace. That's the filter of peace. That's the filter of joy and excitement and energy. Man, you're probably so tired of me saying my fiance and I, I'm thinking through the filter of engagement. You see, we all have filters that shape our words and influence our words. And I think what all of us have to do in the good times and the bad times is put the filter of righteousness on. We put the filter of joy and of peace. Of peace. We need to put the filter of the fruit of the spirit over our mind, over every word that we say. Because you know what? Even though my car broke down this morning, I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I've got the joy of the Lord on the inside of me. God is faithful. God still, still is providing for me. Hey, I got breath in my lungs. I got my hair done yesterday, so, yeah, my car's a wreck, but my hair looks good.
00:05:56.199 --> 00:06:54.329
Yeah, my, my kids are really going through it and I'm praying that God will bring him back to the Lord. But you know what? God has been faithful before. He will be faithful again. Our filter has to be of righteousness, of joy, of tenacity, of endurance, of strength, of, of faith. That needs to be our filter because again, the circumstance, it does not define you. It does not defile you, it does not tell people and identify who you are. That's not what we believe as believers. It's the words that come out of our mouth. It's the mindset and how we perceive everything happening to us. That's what decides the words that come out of your mouth. So today, put the filter of faith on. If you need that spouse to walk through your, your door and you've been waiting and praying, put the filter of faith on. If you've been frustrated and tired and you're just sick and tired of being sick and tired, put the filter of God's peace and God's rest on you.
00:06:54.730 --> 00:06:58.410
Put the filter of grace on God, you're good, God you're faithful.
00:06:59.290 --> 00:07:58.029
If you need to push through and you're just, you're getting weak in the well doing, ask the Holy Spirit. Spirit to give you the spirit of tenacity, the filter of tenacity, the filter of endurance to finish well, to continue running the race. You see, it's not what comes in us, it's what comes out of us. And I believe when we we we change our filter. Just like any air conditioning filter that needs to be changed every once in a while our filters need to be changed. And when we change it, we're going to experience a life and we're going to we go back to yesterday's verse where every word that comes from our our mouth is a fountain of life. They are life giving words even in the worst of situations. Father, we just thank you. We thank you that we have the power that you've given us, that we can change our filter, we can change our mindset, we can change our perspective and our outlook on our situation. God, we can't change our situation, we can't change our circumstances.
00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:06.420
But we can change how we look and how we respond to this situation and the circumstance. So Holy Spirit, help change our mind.
00:08:06.819 --> 00:08:36.759
Help change our filter. Give us a filter of joy, a filter of peace, a filter of strength, a filter of endurance, a filter of grace. In Jesus name I pray. Amen and Amen.
