Let's Talk, Pt. 5: Consider Others

Let's Talk, Pt. 5: Consider Others

What impact do our everyday words have on those around us? In today’s episode, host Gaby Alessi invites us to reflect on the power of our speech as we wrap up the “Let’s Talk” series. Together, we’ll discover how our words can either build up or tear down, why Scripture calls us to align our conversations with the character of God, and practical ways we can guard our hearts and tongues in daily life. We’ll explore the challenges of negative self-talk, the influence our words have on others, and how even our best actions can be undermined by careless speech.

Join us as we lean into community, asking God to guide our words and help us become sources of encouragement. Together, let’s enter into devotion and prayer, trusting the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and conversations for His glory.

00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:55.140
You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1335. Today's Devo is called let's Talk Part 5. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. All right, everybody, we've made it to the end of our let's Talk series, and I hope this has blessed you. And my prayer is that all of us would use this week as a good reminder of Lord, check my heart, check my mindset, check the words that I'm saying, and let every word that I say edify and uplift you and the people around me and not tear it down. Because in Ephesians 4. 29 it says this.

00:00:55.140 --> 00:01:13.219
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. So what we're seeing here is that yes, talk is important for ourselves.

00:01:13.379 --> 00:01:25.950
People say you got to have a good self talk. You got to make sure that your self talk is right. And, and that is true because if you talk negatively about yourself, about your situation, then it's going to get in your heart. And that goes into the, the whole pattern we were talking about yesterday.

00:01:27.230 --> 00:01:52.659
But we also have to realize our talk affects other people. And so what we're seeing here is it's saying, this is Paul telling them that do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. You see the word unwholesome, it refers to a negative, destructive or inappropriate speech.

00:01:52.819 --> 00:01:56.540
And what it's talking about here is gossip or cursing.

00:01:56.540 --> 00:02:29.069
Maybe it's, maybe it's even crude jokes or lies or discouraging words, right? It's words that tear others down instead of building them up. Another meaning you could say is it's, it's something that's not good for your well being or the well being of other people. So unwholesome could also equal the meaning of unhealthy, right? So when Scripture says right here we're talking about unwholesome talk, what it means is it's words that don't align with God's character. That's what we have to remember, it's not just gossip.

00:02:29.150 --> 00:02:40.020
It's words that aren't in agreement and alignment with the character of God. Words that are hurtful, words that are impure or that tear others down instead of lifting them up.

00:02:40.659 --> 00:02:47.780
You see, I don't want. And I know you don't want. We don't want to speak words that are against the character of God.

00:02:48.180 --> 00:03:13.039
So I don't want to say anything, Lord, that would be against you. I don't want to say anything that would hurt you. I don't want to say anything that would distract and pull people away from you and have them look at me. No, I want every word that I say to be in alignment with the character of God and to point them to Jesus. Now, I don't know about you, but I am having this realization even now as I'm recording these, these devos.

00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:25.120
Because I think for me, I get so stuck on actions and, yes, action and. And words go together, but I get so stuck on just making the right decision. God, let me make the right decision. Let me.

00:03:25.120 --> 00:04:37.610
Let me serve your house. Let me do the right thing. And that is good and pleasing to God. Of course. Course it is. But sometimes we can make the right decision and be letting unwholesome talk come out of our mouths in that good decision. See, a couple weeks ago, I think it was last month, they talked about good and God decision, right? There's two decisions that you can make. One that's good, that's pleasing unto you, one that's God, that it pleases God. I can make a God decision, but the words that I say are not godly and are not affirming his character. And so I think this is just a great reminder. This entire week, from day one to today, every verse that we've spoken, it's all in alignment. That our words should bring life, our word should be a fountain of life, that our words should come from our heart, which means our heart needs to get in the right place and get into alignment with God's character. That what comes out of us needs to be in alignment with God's character. And why do we need to do that? Because at the end of the day, God will remember every word that we say. God will have a moment with us when we see him again, that he reminds us that he judges us based off every word that we say.

00:04:38.250 --> 00:04:44.889
So maybe you're somebody listening and you're like, gabby, I'm not a big talker. I'm pretty shy. I like to listen more than I like to talk.

00:04:44.889 --> 00:04:48.529
Well, you know what? Teach us your ways because all of us talkers are here.

00:04:48.529 --> 00:04:55.449
Out here we've got issues and we've got things that keep us and trip us up and it's every word that comes out of our mouth.

00:04:56.250 --> 00:04:59.810
But for every talker on here, lean into the Holy Spirit.

00:04:59.810 --> 00:05:32.759
Lean into the guidance and the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Lean in when maybe someone around you tells you, hey, you shouldn't say that, don't be offended, don't be, don't be hurt by it. Don't be challenged by it, don't be disrespected. Maybe they're sensing something that's not edifying and life giving and you don't see it. And you know what? Thank God we are not all perfect and we can rely on each other and we can rely on the Holy Spirit because at the end of the day, our words should be aligning and affirming the character of God.

00:05:33.160 --> 00:07:27.629
Our actions should be in alignment with the character of God and our actions should please him. But our words, the things that come out of our mouths should please God, our heavenly father. Amen. All right, let's pray us out so we can have a great weekend. Lord, we thank you. We thank you that you have given us so much wisdom in your word. God, when it comes to every word that comes from our mouths, Father, we are thankful for you. We thank you that you guide us. You don't leave us hanging. You don't just let us figure it out. Trial by fire, God. No, you lead us. You guide us with your word. You guide us with, with your truth. And we thank you and we receive it, Lord. And I just pray that you would put a guard over all of our tongues, Lord, that you would put a gate, Father, a filter over all of our mouths as we go to speak and talk to people this weekend. Lord, maybe some people are about to go on vacation with their in laws or they're about to go and and pick up their kids from school or they're about to go back and drop their kids off because school has started. Lord, there are plenty of reasons that we can say negative things. That we can complain, we can excuse ourselves, we can blame other people or say something that tears somebody down. But today, God, we choose to fight that. We choose to control that, Lord. We choose to change our filter, our heart, our mindset, change it all. So that every word that comes from our mouth would align and please you. We thank you for it all. In Jesus name I pray Amen and Amen. Have a Great weekend, everybody. I'll see y' all soon. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day.
