Let's Talk: Part 1: Choose Your Words

What impact do our words have on our lives and the people around us? In today’s episode, host Gaby Alessi kicks off a brand new series called "Let’s Talk," inviting our community to reflect on the power of self-talk and the importance of every word we speak. Drawing from Matthew 12:36-37, we’ll explore together how our words can either lift up or tear down, and why being mindful of what we say—whether in person, online, or even in private moments—is a vital part of living out our faith.
Join us as we start this thought-provoking devotional journey, praying together for hearts and tongues that edify, encourage, and honor God through every conversation.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1331. Today's Devo is called let's Talk Part One. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. Well, hey everyone, it's good to be back. This is Gabby Alessi, your host for the week. And I have been really excited and been thinking about this new series that I want to start this week called let's Talk. And I think this is going to bless you. And my prayer is that it would be a great reminder for all of us listeners. Our talk and our words are one of the most valuable and and most important areas of our lives. And we know that words either bring up, they lift up, or they tear down. So I'm excited to get into this a little life update.
00:01:06.359 --> 00:01:54.379
My fiance and I are about two months away from marriage, so this is really exciting. And we actually just bought a home and we are remodeling our home. And one of the reasons why this series came to mind is because in this season that I am in, if I am not mindful of my self talk and the words that are coming from my mouth, I could either make this season the most exciting and most memorable or the most stressful. And it reminds me of Matthew 12, 36, 37. It says this, but I tell you, and this is Jesus speaking. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words, you will be acquitted, and by your words, you will be condemned.
00:01:55.340 --> 00:02:05.420
I read this a couple days ago when I was having some time in the morning with the Lord and I'm going through the New Testament in 90 days right now. This was like day two.
00:02:06.299 --> 00:02:14.000
So it happened very fast. And this verse really convicted me because I don't know if you're like me.
00:02:14.000 --> 00:03:02.250
I am an unfiltered person. I don't think before I speak. I make jokes without thinking, I make comments before thinking. And sometimes I can use my personality or my relationship with somebody as an excuse for the words that I say. You know, even as I'm sharing this devo, I'm challenged and I'm almost a little uncomfortable because I want to make sure I'm Very mindful of the words that I'm. I'm using as I deliver this, because this verse has really convicted me. It's been something that's been in the back of my mind ever since I read it. Because the thought and the idea that every word I say is remembered by God, that's a scary thought.
00:03:03.289 --> 00:03:36.110
Like, that's a. That's a crazy thought to know that every word that I say, every word that I text, every word that I send, that God remembers it, and God holds it. And in fact, God will confront it and confront me on the words that I have said. You know, it doesn't just say, hey, God remembers it, but he throws it away. It says, no, there's going to be a day where we are held liable for the things that we have said. By your words, you will be acquitted. By your words, you will be condemned.
00:03:36.509 --> 00:04:13.259
Now, I don't think this means that your words are more important than your actions, because I think God looks at our actions and the things that we do, and he also will judge us by those things. But this is specifically talking about the words that we say, the things that come out of our mouth. And I think this is just a great reminder for all, all of us, whatever season that you're in, that our words are powerful, that the words we use will either bless us or curse us. The words we use will either bless others or curse others.
00:04:13.979 --> 00:05:14.149
We just got back from our youth camp with our teenagers at the church, and we did a girls panel on one of the mornings. And I talked about this verse because the younger generation now, they say less words than they post every day. So, for example, if we were to count up how many words teenagers, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, the next generation, even millennials, if we were to count how many words they say throughout the day and then count how many words they text, they send in a group chat, they comment on Instagram, or they post, you would probably have like a million words to, like, a thousand words because we're a digital world, they're a digital generation. But I do believe that God sees those words as well, and he counts those to us as well. That everything that comes from us in words, everything that comes from us, that we're communicating to somebody else, God holds that, and God will remind us of those things.
00:05:14.470 --> 00:05:32.000
And I'm just in a place in my life where I don't want to do anything that hurts the heart of God, not because it embarrasses me, but because it hurts Him. And I don't want to put God in a place where he says, gabby, you lived right, you loved my people, but you talked terribly about them.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:07:21.870
You lived right, you served right, you always made right decisions and you always, in your actions honored me. But in your tongue you didn't. From your mouth, you didn't. And so I think this is a great reminder for us today. And this is the Kickstart. This is the beginning of this series. This is what is the anchor of this week's Devo. I tell you that everyone will have to give an account on the day of Judgment for every empty word that they have spoken. For by your words, you will be acquitted and by your words, you will be condemned. My prayer today is that all of our words would be uplifting and all of our words would be something that God is praying proud to tell us about on the Day of Judgment. So let's pray. Father, we just thank you for today, Father. We use our words right now to lift you up, to edify you, God, to glorify you. We pray over this topic, God, the topic of our words. Because, God, this is something that we throw out there and don't even realize that it can harm others and harm ourselves and it can harm you, Lord. So, so I pray that your spirit would be on this week. I pray that your spirit would lead us this week in the words that we say. I pray that your spirit would convict us, would, would steer us, would guide us in every word that comes from our mouths, Lord. And I pray that you would show us and you would remind us of the words that we should be using that edify, that uplift and encourage and not the words that condemn, not the words that tear down, not the words that hurt others. So lead us this week, God. We're open. We're ready to talk about it. In Jesus name I pray. Amen and Amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day.
