Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. Good morning everybody and happy Tuesday. My name is Richelle Alessi and I get the privilege of being with you this week. And as we came out of Holy Week, I wanted to do a week on some of the things that we learned about Jesus throughout that entire week. Things that he showed us that we can do today, things we can learn from him. And honestly, how can we be more like Him? And yesterday we talked about his perseverance, and today I want to talk about his self control. And I love it, because self control is actually a fruit of the spirit. We showed that Jesus many years ago operated in the fruit of the spirit that you and I can operate today as well. And that is so beautiful that we can, can do that. And I got this idea of, well, I didn't get this idea, this is from the Bible, but I just, I noticed that Jesus operated in self control.

And one of the verses is actually in Luke 23:9 and it says, to give you a little bit of context behind this verse, this is now when Jesus brought two to Herod and they're questioning him and they're almost like trying to get Jesus to talk back, to defend himself. They're trying to get him to show or perform a miracle, to truly prove himself to be everything that he said he was. And the, the worst part is that the people in that crowd was not only just people that didn't believe in him, but were also the Jews, the people who just a few days ago had welcomed him in Jerusalem with palms and had worshiped him. Those same people are there in that crowd questioning him and saying, crucify him. And in that moment when the people that celebrated and worshiped him also are turning on Him. And you have these high level leaders of the time who had all the power right to, to the world at the time, questioning Jesus. Yet Jesus, this is what happens in verse nine. It says he plied him with many questions, and that is Herod, but Jesus gave him no answer.

So here's Herod and everybody questioning Jesus, trying to get to defend himself, but Jesus gives Him no answer. We know that that day he was falsely accused. We know that the people that praise him turned on Him. These are all things we learned, have heard. Yet he stayed quiet.

And that was not weakness.

That was not because he was just tired.

He knew his assignment and he didn't react to the words of man. He knew his Father's assignment, despite what people said to Him. The King of Kings decided to have self control with his words in the hardest moments of his life.

What a great example of self control that while people are questioning you, pressuring you, the pressure was on Jesus. Jesus had already even asked the Father, could you take this from me? And the Father said no. Jesus took that assignment. He persevered. And in the middle of even perseverance, he showed self control with how he responded and how he acted.

We truly have the best example in Jesus. And today sometimes we ask ourselves, how can we be more like him where self control is one of those things. He showed us many years ago that no pressure would distract him from the assignment and that no pressure would eliminate the self control that he had. Because he was strong in the Lord. And he modeled that for us in one of the hardest seasons or probably the hardest moments of his life. And I am so thankful that he did because because of that, now we have a great example of self control and what we can do as his children as well. So let's pray. Dear Father God, I want to thank youk for your example of self control for us, Lord. Self control is a fruit of the Spirit and we can operate in that, Father. We can put self control to practice. If youf did it, Lord, we can too. Because none of us are ever going to have to endure what yout did. For on that day, on that cross and all those days leading up to it, Father, none of our sufferings will ever compare to yours.

Which means we can do what you did many years ago.

We can have self control in one of the hardest moments of our life because that is something that you modeled. That's something that we can do and have access to as your children.
