Why do we sometimes find it hard to slow down and truly rest?

In today's episode, Gaby Alessi Calatayud invites us to explore what it means to seek genuine rest in the midst of busy schedules and long to-do lists. Together, we'll reflect on the difference between working hard and simply being busy, discovering the value of finding our peace and purpose in God rather than in constant achievement. We'll also learn simple, practical ways to rest, through worship, prayer, and quality time with those we love.

Let’s join together as a community to pray for the wisdom to embrace restful seasons, trusting that true rest is found in the presence and love of God.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional Podcast, episode 1494. Today's devo is called Busy Body.

00:00:07.070 --> 00:01:11.715
Hey there, we're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to-do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a 5-minute daily dose of of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Well, welcome back. Happy Thursday, everybody. I hope you have been enjoying all of these episodes. What a blessing. Also, I'm just gonna say it now, this is so weird that we're on camera. This is my first full week alone on camera, and it is so bizarre. So if you see me like start to drift and not look at you, it's because I'm used to not looking into the camera. So I apologize. Or if I don't smile enough, It's probably because I'm not used to being on camera for 5, or in my case, 8 minutes straight. Okay, let's jump into this because I am looking at, I've been thinking about, you know, the inconsistencies. And so far this week we've talked about fear, fear of the unknown, fear of the future. We talked about unwholesome talk, keeping that from you.

00:01:11.715 --> 00:01:30.266
Yesterday we talked about releasing control for all of my control freaks. And then today I wanna speak about Being busy, being a busybody. I think already you're seeing that my personality is very, um, I like things in control. I like things a certain way. I lean more Type A.

00:01:30.266 --> 00:01:52.382
Um, it, I'm so Type A that I've married a man that didn't even know what Type A is. So that should tell you opposites attract. He is the most Type B person in the world and I love him for it because he helps me be more chill. Sometimes I get more crazy, but it's fine because God brought us together. But I wanna talk about being a busybody because I think working hard is a gift.

00:01:52.382 --> 00:02:26.715
The, the Bible talks about, you know, when you're working on something, whatever you do, do it for the glory of the Lord. Um, the Bible talks a lot about taking ownership and when you say you're gonna do something, finish it. You know, don't just complete something and forget about it. So the Bible is all about working hard, working hard, but there's a difference between working hard and then being a busybody. And there's a, there's a habit that we can get into of, if I'm not working, I'm not productive. If I'm not working, I'm not at peace. If I'm not working, I'm not in control.

00:02:26.715 --> 00:02:39.302
And this has been challenging me in this season because I just came out of a year where in one year I got engaged, married, and then remodeled a house in like 8 months.

00:02:39.302 --> 00:02:54.748
And it was stressful, of course, but like, To me, it was fun. Like, that stress, weirdly enough, is exciting. I liked knowing that every single day I had to mark off like 10 things on my to-do list. I felt productive. It made me feel valuable.

00:02:54.748 --> 00:02:59.117
It made me feel driven. I'm a competitive person.

00:02:59.117 --> 00:05:21.675
I, I have a very high drive for certain things. So when I was able to do it, that achievement really just added to my, probably my pride and my ego a little bit. And then what happened was when we got married, we did the holidays and everything slowed down, but it was the holidays. So I was finding things to, to do and it was fun. It was entertaining when you're with family, friends and all that. And then January hit and I'm at a different pace now and I'm not planning a wedding or a massive event coming up. I'm, I'm not having to remodel this house or look for something. I'm not having to achieve something. And this year, really, I'm just having to cruise control, basically. I'm having to just enjoy this life and make time for now my husband and figure out our dynamic at home. I'm having to figure out the dynamic of family and how many times a week are we with his family, my family. I'm, I'm figuring out the routine of church and friends and work and husband and this and this and that and all of that. So in that routine, really you just kind of feel like you're just cruising and it's relaxing. And yeah, there's— it doesn't mean there's no stress, but the stress doesn't compare to last year's stress. And I say all this to say is that we could actually resist rest and resting in the Lord because we think it is better for us to be working and to be busy rather than resisting in him. And Psalm 62:1— all that to say, the word of God says, truly my soul finds rest in God, my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and salvation, he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. You see, I went with a year where I was finding my rest, my fortress, my foundation in my own ability to get things done. Where in 2026 I'm having to learn that I find rest in the Lord. I don't need another achievement to make me feel validated. I don't need another accomplishment or check off my to-do list to show me that I'm chosen by God and that I have such a big life ahead of me. Yeah, my flesh needs that. I really want that. I'm like looking for things to do all the time at work.

00:05:21.675 --> 00:06:30.057
But at the same time, I have to sit back. What I need to do now is find rest in him and find rest in the salvation that he's given me. Because there's times where we can actually mistake what real rest is. We think resting is just sleeping in. We think resting is just, you know, doom scrolling, even though that feels so good every once in a while. We think resting is just binge watching a TV show. And those things, yes, maybe physically it is enabling us to power down and we're not getting up and we're not walking and whatever. But I'm not resting in the Father. I'm not resting in worship with him. I'm not resting in prayer. And so for anybody that is a busybody, and maybe you're in a season similar to mine where life has kind of come to a halt and you aren't doing what you're used to do, then I want to encourage you to take this time to rest in the Lord. Rest in him by worshiping him every day. You can even put on worship music in the morning and just Sing to him or worship him in your actions. Worship him in the words that you speak every day. Find rest in worship. Find rest in prayer whenever you have time. Pray throughout the day.

00:06:30.057 --> 00:07:02.362
You don't just have to pray after this devo. You don't have to just pray when we pray at the devo. Pray throughout the day. Ask the Lord, Father, show me what I need to do in this season. How can I rest more in you? And then lastly, true rest comes when you spend time with your family. Get with your family, get with your in-laws, get with the nieces and the nephews, get with the people that— maybe you don't have family with you, you don't live in a city with your blood family, but find your friends that you can get around, spend quality time. Don't, don't go on your phone with your friends.

00:07:02.362 --> 00:07:06.072
Don't pick up your phone with your family. That'll be there when you go home.

00:07:06.072 --> 00:07:36.805
But when you're with your family, have quality time. Have conversations, talk about life, talk about the Lord to them, and find true rest in the season. Becasue here's what I know rest isn't forever. At the beginning of the, of creation, God worked for 6 days and he rested 1, which means the majority of our lives we're going to be working. So if you're in a resting season, let's receive it together. Let's enjoy it. Let's kick up our feet and thank the Lord because we can rest in him.

00:07:36.805 --> 00:08:39.111
Father, I pray that you would help us find rest in you, not rest in our own abilities, not rest in even social media or TV, God, or just even lounging on the couch. Father, I pray that we would try— we would find true, real rest in you, worshiping you, praying to you, God, and then enjoying the, the relationships that you've given us. I pray that we would always remind ourselves to rest after a long day's work, Father, that you've given us the ability to work hard to achieve many things. But Father, at the end of it, we need to sit down and enjoy the things that you've given us. So thank you for your rest. We receive it today in Jesus' name. Amen. So there you have it, your 5-minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on day.
