What if the battle you’re facing isn’t meant to break you, but to build something stronger within you?

In this episode of the My Morning Devotional Podcast, Richelle Alessi begins a new journey through the book of James with James 1:1–8. These verses challenge us to look at trials differently, recognizing that the testing of our faith can produce perseverance, maturity, and a deeper trust in God.

Richelle encourages us to shift our focus from the difficulty of the trial to what God may be developing through it. Instead of only asking, “Why is this happening?” we can begin asking, “God, what are You building in me?”

In this daily devotional, you’ll be encouraged to:

See trials as opportunities for spiritual growth.
Ask God for wisdom when you don’t know what to do.
Allow perseverance to strengthen your faith.
Trust that God is working in you through difficult seasons.

The battle may be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be wasted. With God, the challenges you face can increase your capacity, strengthen your faith, and develop the maturity you’ll need for what comes next.

Whatever you’re facing today, remember: the trial isn’t only about what you’re going through. It may also be about who God is building you to become.

What is God developing in you through the battle you’re facing today?

Hey there, we're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to-do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five-minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast.

Richelle Alessi

Good morning, everybody, and happy Monday. My name is Rochelle Alesi, and I get to be your host this week. I am so excited because for this month, me and my sisters-in-law, what we are going to do is go through the book of James together. So there is five books in the books of James. One, two, three, four, and five. And we each are taking a book. And you may be wondering, there's only four of you. Where is the fifth going to go? We're actually going to be filming a bonus episode about James 5. So the entire month would be one through four. We'll each taking a chapter, and our bonus episode will all be about James 5. So I really hope that you guys will stay tuned and join us for that as well. But I get the privilege to start. So what I'm going to do this week is we're going to go through James 1, and I'm going to go through certain verses. And we're going to read it in order because I think it would be so cool if we approach this week as a reading this chapter together. So each day we'll open up our Bible, we'll read a couple of verses, see a takeaway, and then tomorrow we're back to a couple more verses. So let's read. Today is going to be James 1, 1 through 8. And it says, Consider pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lack wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding a fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt. Because the one who doubts is like the wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. The person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and is stable in all they do. The starting of this chapter is so strong. But something that we should take away is this trials aren't meant to break you. They're meant to build perseverance, they're meant to build maturity, and they're meant to build a stronger faith in you. I love that this verse even goes to say, if you need wisdom, ask the Lord. Isn't it beautiful that we can go to the Lord? And in the hard times, He's going to build something. That's why I call this episode Built Through the Battle. Because we all know we are going to face battles. But with the Lord, we know that we are going to build perseverance, maturity, and a stronger faith. Trials are not meant to break you, they're meant to build something in you. So the trial that you're facing right now, ask the Lord, Lord, what are you developing in me? The truth is, it's developing something. What is it? So instead of now looking at the trial and saying, this is so hard, now you can look at it and say, hey, I can conquer this because it's trying to build something in me. What is it? And now that you know, you're gonna let that work take place because on the other side, you know you're going to win with the Lord. But now your spirit, your maturity, your perseverance, your capacity would have grown. It would be different, and it will make you into the person that the Lord wants you to be, into the person that God is developing. So we know through James today that those trials are not meant to break you, but they're meant to build a perseverance, a maturity, and a stronger faith. So let's pray. Dear Father God, thank you so much for giving us what we need through all these trials. Lord, you are with us. We ask today for you to show us what is it that you're wanting to build in us. This trial is only gonna make us stronger. So, what is it that you want to develop? And let that be the thing that resonates with us today. Not the hardship, but what you are building, what you are developing in us. So we thank you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
