00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:21.359
You're listening to the My Morning Devotional Podcast, episode 1474. Today's devo is called, "A Generous Father." Hey there! We're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to-do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.
00:00:21.359 --> 00:00:36.340
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a 5-minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Well, welcome back to our— one of our last episodes. It's Thursday. Happy Thursday, everybody.
00:00:36.340 --> 00:00:54.619
This is Gabby and Christian, your hosts for the week. Actually, I'm your host for the week and he's the guest host for the week, my husband, and he has been killing it. Yesterday's devo was so powerful and, uh, I'm excited for this one because now we're going to talk about a different attribute or characteristic of our Father, which is his generosity.
00:00:54.619 --> 00:01:02.100
Yeah, that God is a generous Father. That's right. And we read it here in Matthew 7:7-11. I get to read this one.
00:01:02.100 --> 00:01:16.180
This one's gonna be a little bit longer, but it says this Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
00:01:16.180 --> 00:02:01.540
Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him? I love this verse because first of all, I think it talks about, you know, if you need something or if you desire something for— from our Father, ask, seek, and knock. Yeah, God is somebody that's like, hey, I'm an open book. You, you come to me. I am willing. Ask whatever you need. Seek for it. Look for it and, and knock on the door. God likes that we have our own initiative, that we take initiative to pursue him and to pursue different things. And God is generous with that.
00:02:01.540 --> 00:02:08.900
But then I love the correlation that it makes between an earthly father and the Heavenly Father. Yeah, because that's what we're doing this week.
00:02:08.900 --> 00:02:50.400
And he goes on to say, basically what he's trying to say is You as an earthly father, you who are evil, you are born into iniquity, you wouldn't give your kids bad gifts. You wouldn't give your kids something that they wouldn't ask for. Yeah. And then he goes, how much more would our heavenly Father? Yeah. How great are his gifts? How much more would he give to his children when they ask for it? And I think this just explains the heart of our Father. Yeah. I think it shows us that God is generous. You know, even going back to yesterday's episode, a lot of times we think in the rebuke or in the trial, we feel like we're distant from God, or the only gifts God gives us is a rebuke.
00:02:50.400 --> 00:03:08.129
And we can almost see it as we're resenting him for the trial that we're going through, when outside of that, there are so many gifts that God has given us. That's right. Just look around your life. Look at your children. Look at your spouse. Look at your job. Look at your school. Look at your car. There's so many gifts that the Lord has given you.
00:03:08.129 --> 00:03:12.129
But the blessing to that is, is there's more gifts to come. That's right.
00:03:12.129 --> 00:03:19.409
That if you do ask your Father for more, he is willing to open up the windows of heaven and pour out gifts for you that you can't contain.
00:03:19.409 --> 00:04:00.729
Why? Because he's a good father. That's right. And if you would do it for your kids at Christmas or your kids on Easter with the Easter Bunny, whatever it is, if you have the heart to lavish these gifts upon your children, imagine the heart that God has for us. So true, so true. And I— two points. The first point is, you know, we have nieces and nephews. One day we'll have a baby of our own, and any good father would not give the child the chocolate that they want when it's 10 o'clock in the morning and they see the chocolate and they go, Dad, I want the chocolate. Yeah, you see, they might have asked, and they might have asked in the right way. It's very good. But the father looks at it and says, that's not good for you, and it's not good for you right now.
00:04:00.729 --> 00:06:02.370
So, you know, what's the chocolate in our lives? What are the things that we're asking for that quite frankly would lead us probably away from God, right? So you're asking for a job opportunity, you're asking for, you know, Lord, I want this new car, Lord, I want this new job or relationship, I want this relationship, and God's saying, if I gave that to you right now, all it would do is hurt you. It wouldn't give you the satisfaction that you want, and he's seeing it as a father that You're asking for chocolate at 9 o'clock in the morning. He's not going to give it to you because he knows that's going to make you crash and burn later. That's going to give you cavities in your teeth. And in the same way, a relationship will damage you. In the same way, the car that you want or the job that you want will set you up in a position where you think to yourself, I don't need God anymore. So that's the first thing. That's so good. Let's be very mindful. Let's be very mindful of what we ask for. The second thing is this, and, you know, I love the Bible. I study the Bible. I try to study it as much as I can. But I love getting into the nitty-gritty details of the Bible. And we're reading this from the book of Matthew. Matthew would have been a tax collector during the time of Christ, and he wrote this obviously not in English. I think we all know that. He wrote this in Koine Greek, and Koine Greek is obviously a different language and a different dialect from English, right? So it has different type of verbs that are very different from our type of verbs. So when we hear the thing of ask and it will be given to you, we think to ourselves, well, if I ask, it should be given to me. And we think about it in a singular way. We think about it in, I've prayed to God that I want healing. He has not responded, but I prayed once. When in reality, in the Koine Greek, every single one of these verbs, right? Ask, seek, knock. The verb and the tense that the verb is in is a present and continuous tense, meaning this, The Bible would more accurately read, and I think it's in the New Living Translation, but we're reading from the NIV. It would more accurately read as this, and I hope this speaks to you.
00:06:02.370 --> 00:06:17.730
Go on asking and it will be given to you. Go on seeking and you will find. Go on knocking and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who goes on asking receives. The one who goes on seeking finds.
00:06:17.730 --> 00:06:55.329
And to the one who goes on knocking, the door will be opened to you. For which of you, if your son goes on asking for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he goes on asking for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who go on asking him? So I think when we look at this, we also got to understand The Lord does not give us things the first time. Yeah, he speaks about it in other parables. The parable of the, of the widow that asked the judge to continue to commute her sentence or commute a sentence.
00:06:55.329 --> 00:07:28.689
So I think when we look at this, we got to understand this isn't just I ask once and I don't get, so I don't believe. Yeah, it's I go on asking for healing. Yes, I go on asking for, for a spouse. Yeah, I go on asking for the different things that I need in my life. And as I think it's just a verse right before, if he feeds the sparrows and they don't sow and they don't reap, how much more will he feed you? If he clothes the lilies that in all of, in all of Solomon's splendor weren't dressed like those, how much more will he dress you?
00:07:28.689 --> 00:07:40.459
So go on asking, go on seeking, go on knocking, and the door will be open to you. Amen. Because we have a Father that is generous, but we have a Father that is fair.
00:07:40.459 --> 00:07:51.180
And I don't know one father that would give the kids the gifts that they want if they asked for it one time, because if they asked for it one time, how bad do they really want it? Yeah.
00:07:51.180 --> 00:08:44.919
Oh my Lord, that was so good. I'm gonna pray us out because, wow, that was phenomenal. Father, there is so much good in this episode, and it's hard for us to even and ask you for one thing, God, because you've just given us so much in these last 5, 6, 7 minutes. Father, I just ask that everything that was spoken would sow a seed that would stir up a challenge, Father, in all of us. It would, it would point us back to you and ultimately let it all glorify you. I pray, Lord, that you would give us the endurance to keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Father, I pray that you would give us the self-control that if you those. Who are not giving a gift right. Now, that we trust that it is not the season and it's not the time. And I ask that all of us would keep remembering and would look at and would see, Father, your generosity. You are a good Father. You are a giving Father, and we thank you for it.
